Your Journeyto a Life Partner

If you are in need of a service dog and are interested in our Owner-Training Program, consider enrolling in regular, customized lessons just for you and your dog.

Once you and your dog have been accepted into the Guardian Signal Dogs Training Programme, you will be invited to an Induction Day where you will meet our training team, learn more about the programme, and connect with other handlers beginning their journey.

Our training programme is designed to build a strong partnership between you and your dog through a structured, progressive approach. Beginning with the Foundation Stage, you will develop the essential skills and knowledge needed to succeed as a signal dog team. As you progress, each stage introduces new challenges and real-world experiences, helping you and your dog gain confidence in a variety of environments.

Training may include exposure to public transport, busy public spaces, healthcare settings, shopping centres, outdoor environments, and other everyday situations you may encounter together. Throughout the programme, our trainers will provide ongoing guidance, support, and assessment to ensure you and your dog are developing the skills required to work safely and effectively as a team.

If you are interested in joining the Guardian Signal Dogs Training Programme, we would love to hear from you. Please get in touch to learn more.

01

Foundation

At Guardian Signal Dogs, we welcome dogs of all ages to begin their journey towards becoming a reliable assistance partner. The Foundation Stage provides the building blocks for future success, helping both handler and dog develop the skills, confidence, and understanding needed for the training programme ahead.

During this stage, you will learn the fundamentals of communication, engagement, canine body language, training principles, and responsible handling. The focus is on creating a strong bond and establishing the foundations for future signal and alert work.

02

Candidate

Once your dog has demonstrated the skills and maturity required to progress, they will enter the Candidate Stage. This milestone recognises your partnership's commitment and readiness to take on more structured assistance dog training.

Through regular workshops, practical training sessions, and guided exercises, you will continue developing your dog's focus, confidence, and reliability. Topics may include advanced handling skills, learning theory, body awareness exercises, environmental confidence, and working effectively in increasingly distracting environments.

03

Basic Training

During the Basic Training Stage, your dog will begin learning the core skills expected of a future Guardian Signal Dog.

This stage focuses on developing good public manners, reliable obedience, confidence in a variety of environments, and the foundations of task-based work.

Training is delivered through a combination of:

  • Public Access Training

  • Signal and Alert Task Training

  • Real-World Scenario Training

  • Workshops and Group Sessions

  • Social and Confidence-Building Activities

As your dog progresses, they may be issued with a Guardian Signal Dogs "In Training" identifier, helping members of the public recognise that your dog is actively working towards qualification.

04

Advanced Training

Advanced Training builds upon the skills developed in earlier stages, refining both public access behaviours and specialised assistance tasks. Training becomes increasingly focused on reliability, consistency, and real-world application.

Handlers and dogs will work together in a range of environments, including healthcare settings, public transport, shopping centres, workplaces, and other everyday situations.

The aim is to ensure that your partnership can work confidently, safely, and effectively wherever life takes you.

05

Basic Public Access Assessment

The Basic Public Access Assessment evaluates your dog's ability to behave appropriately and remain under control in public environments.

This assessment measures key skills such as:

  • Calm behaviour around people and other animals

  • Appropriate responses to distractions

  • Reliable obedience and handler focus

  • Safe and responsible public access conduct

Successful completion demonstrates that your partnership is ready to move forward to more advanced levels of training.

06

Advanced Public Access Assessment

The Advanced Public Access Assessment is the final stage of qualification. This comprehensive evaluation tests your dog's ability to work confidently and reliably in a variety of complex real-world situations.

The assessment confirms that your dog can:

  • Maintain excellent public access standards

  • Perform required signal or alert tasks reliably

  • Remain calm and focused in challenging environments

  • Work safely and effectively as an assistance dog partner

Passing the Advanced Public Access Assessment signifies that you and your dog have met the standards required to qualify as a Guardian Signal Dogs partnership, ready to navigate the world together with confidence and independence.
